I gave him my name, told him I was Australian, and that I had come ashore from a sunken ship. Harriet Weir Leamside was not a happy woman, although she was long accustomed to the way things were, and she could not see any changes to them in the foreseeable future. So she continued to be the apparently placid and pleasant wife of Jacob Leamside, the principal of an established family business. She had no children and was so apparently, and so reliably, the person that others supposed her to be. But during World War II when the Japanese was close to overtaking Singapore, a young Harriet did what she had to do in order to survive. And she has since kept a secret about her past until now. Her life was about to change, completely and forever.
