Caribbean Cultural Identity

Up until the 1970 the Jamaican establishment considered "culture" to be European. Visiting scholars and artists such as St. Lucia's Derek Walcott slowly convinced political and business leaders that Caribbean islands have their own culture beyond the colonial influence, leading to the establishment of institutions such as schools, galleries and theaters to celebrate the island's own multicultural heritage.
