Quash Hanton was born in South Carolina about 1824, before the Civil War, in a time when virtually every African-American in the south was born into slavery. Family units among slaves were almost always forbidden. Seventeen years after emancipation Quash has a wife and five children and is living near Elloree, South Carolina. Here begins one side of this family story. Dorothy Coles starts out to write a few words about her family, but questions lead her to uncover more of her family roots. Soon, she finds family she never knew about and they become part of a multi-generational story. The story tells of poor farmers from rural South Carolina who worked hard and ultimately became prosperous citizens in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It's a personal story filled with struggle. It's the story of the Hantons, the Randolphs, and their connections: A strong family who never gave up their dreams.
