Selections from Polish Fiction

The contemporary Polish short story constitutes a complex and diverse literary genre, drawing on the traditions and experiences of previous generations while simultaneously reflecting contemporary cultural and social trends. It often addresses themes related to social and political issues and explores various psychological and emotional aspects of humanity. Nobel Prize winner Olga Tokarczuk is one of the most important contemporary short story writers, whose stories are characterized by their exploration of the depths of the human psyche. We must also mention Andrzej Bielebyuk, whose witty critique of Polish social life, as well as the great short story writer and screenwriter Marek Hwaszko, who rebelled against Polish political and social reality.
