Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2018 in the subject Psychology - Consulting and Therapy, , course: Marriage and Family Therapy, language: English, abstract: This study proposes to better equip mental health professionals when working with South Asian Indian (SAI) women exposed to domestic violence (DV). It does so by shedding light on many traditions and cultural norms that keep women subordinate to men, and cements patriarchy which this study believes is the root and cause of DV. With the SAI community growing rapidly in the USA, this study examines how therapists can best approach the treatment of DV within this specific community as well as DV victims in the general population. Domestic violence affects people of all race, culture, gender, religion, socioeconomic status, and educational levels. In addition, it can happen to heterosexual or same-sex intimate partners who are married, cohabitating, or dating. According to various findings, DV is the single major cause of injury to women, exceeding rapes, muggings, and auto accidents combined.
