Using Literature in the Middle School Classroom

Children’s literature has long been a vital part of children’s lives, and stories that reflect society can help students learn about the world around them. This book emphasizes the role of fiction reading in middle school curriculum, and how it can easily help children draw conclusions to real life activities. Topics are based on a typical middle school program of study and each topical section includes a sample lesson plan, a list of books that illustrate the topic and suggested websites for further exploration. The lesson plans are interdisciplinary, as many middle schools today are organized into interdisciplinary teaching teams. Book suggestions for varying reading levels are included to allow for differentiation of instruction.
