Young Kate, or The Rescue is a novel created in 1844 set in now West Virginia's Kanawha River Valley in 1798. The French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War had been fought. The previously contested area was now developing and a new frontier had opened up to the west. But not all was well as there were those who wished to exploit these lands.
