Wuthering Heights (1847) by Emily Bronte recounts the life story of Heathcliff from his childhood to his death in his late thirties. He is an orphan, found on the streets of Liverpool and taken by Mr. Earnshaw to Wuthering Heights, where he is reluctantly cared for by the family. After Mr. Earnshaw death, Hindley claims his place as master of Wuthering Heights and makes life miserable for Heathcliff, his adopted brother, by treating him like a servant. Heathcliff and Catherine fall in love, but she decides to marry Edgar causing Heathcliff to run away. He returns later, affluent and educated, acquires Wuthering Heights, and sets about gaining his revenge on the people that he believed ruined his life. "e;Emily Bronte, author of the greatest psychological novel ever written, with the most complex character ever conceived. Read "e;Wuthering Heights"e; when you're 18 and you think Heathcliff is a romantic hero; when you're 30, he's a monster; at 50 you see he's just human."e; - Alice Hoffman in her 2014 "e;By the Book"e; interview with The New York Times
