Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. With one or two exceptions, the following papers have appeared in the columns of the Daily Telegraph, from which they are reprinted by permission of the proprietors, and with scarcely any alteration. The rule laid down was that they should be strictly descriptive articles, expressing no opinion pro or con. I have to acknowledge the ready courtesy and assistance which I have received from most of the representative men, whose names occur in the following pages. The only exceptions I have been obliged in self-defence t-o specify; Init they are so few :is simply to prove the rule. I feel that I have learnt much, and softened down a good many prejudices in the course of my two or three years religious peregrinations; and the hope of producing the same results in stay-at-home travellers induces me to collect the fugitive papers into a volume.
