Unemployed Jack DuMot has cynically come to believe that life is best lived in the solitude of his own dining room, where he can measure his world while keep randomness at arm's length. After losing both of his parents as a young man, then watching his marriage fail and his job prospects grow dim as America enters the Great Recession, he is left staring out the window at a future of failure, doubt and disappointment. His orderly world is thrown into turmoil when he visits a small, frozen southwest Minnesota prairie town, where he discovers that restoring meaning to his life will require digging for answers among the deep roots of dark family secrets. With beautiful former co-worker Tina unexpectedly at his side and unnamed danger in his rearview mirror, Jack enters the wintery world of Midwest curling clubs and championship matches played at the highest level of the sport - in search of something he never knew he lost.
