The Romano-African Domus: Studies in Space Decoration and Function

This volume takes as its starting point a catalogue of elite houses in Roman Africa and looks at the relationship between the mosaic decorations of particular rooms and their function. Significant patterns emerge: reception rooms tend to be decorated with figurative motifs, audience chambers and private rooms tend to have geometric or floral motifs, whilst vestibules have much simpler designs. Margherita Carucci also looks at the effect which this decorative arrangement was intended to have, and what it can tell us about the concerns of the Romano-African elite.
