The Pupil

Hired to tutor the precocious Morgan Moreen, young Pemberton quickly realizes that his pupil is wiser and more perceptive than the adults around him. Trapped in a family of charming but irresponsible schemers, Morgan clings to his teacher as his only true ally. As Pemberton grows attached to the boy, he faces an agonizing choice—stay loyal to his principles or abandon a child who has no one else. The Pupil is a short story by Henry James, originally published in 1891. HENRY JAMES [1843 -1916] was born in New York but emigrated to Europe early in life. He is one of the most important figures in Anglo-Saxon turn-of-the-century literature, with novels such as The American [1877] and the horror novel The Turn of the Screw [1898].
