The Place-Names of Northumberland and Durham

Originally published in 1920, this volume provides information on the historical background of place-names in County Durham and Northumberland. The text was compiled by Allen Mawer (1879–1942), who was instrumental in the foundation of the English Place-Name Society. Entries are listed in alphabetical order and vary in length, depending on historical interest or the complexity of their development.
