This book harnesses symbolic interaction theory to understand the daily routine of intergroup relations. Intergroup relations encompass class, race and ethnicity, gender, sexuality, age, religion, and disability.

These relations, the book argues, are formed through daily routine and are central to individual and social formation. The purpose is to discover how we reproduce intergroup relations during our daily routines and how we can understand the limits and constraints of intergroup relations, which create the conditions for empathy and emancipation across cultures. While focusing on daily routine, the book provides global and multicultural coverage, offering critical historical and contemporary case studies of intergroup relations and challenges across the axes of class, race and ethnicity, gender, and variegated identities and communities. Moving from key studies of racial and ethnic relations in US history, the book examines in depth further examples from South Africa and Palestine to Afghanistan and Ukraine.
