The Almost Perfect Crime

Although virtually forgotten today, the name of S.S. Van Dine was recognized by mystery lovers around the world a century ago. Van Dine was the author of the Philo Vance novels, beginning with The Benson Murder Case.

Most critics agreed that his first six mysteries were his best, and the later books did not hold the same quality of puzzles. His books were made into films, and the short films associated with him were made into comics. By the time he passed away in 1939, his works had slid down to the point where he was writing mysteries for Gracie Allen. The most enduring legacy from his novels has become the intelligent American male sleuths like those created by Ellery Queen and Anthony Boucher.
