When Annie Thornton, midwife and apprentice witch, falls through time to a 15th-century Yorkshire village with her telepathic cat, Rosamund, she befriends Will and Jack, two soldiers returning from the French Wars. Mistress Meg, Annie's ancestral aunt living in the 15th century, is also a midwife and witch. She has contrived their partnership to expose corruption in her troubled village. Intrigued by the mysterious disappearance of a local innkeeper, the three newcomers investigate, finding a village shrouded in fear. The steward of the manor is a cunning and dangerous adversary who means to obstruct their investigation. Between falling in love, delivering babies medieval-style, learning about witchcraft and seeking a murderer, Annie finds that even magic and steadfast friends cannot keep her out of danger.
