In the last decades research on urban historical writing in the late medieval and early modern period has been stimulated by postmodern thinking and the cultural turn leading to innovative scholarly approaches and new perspectives on premodern cities and their historiography. The volume's purpose is to take stock of recent research. Its contributions consider critically the results of influential studies against the background of these developments. They present the approaches of current projects and point out crucial issues of the field. Out of this synthesis and reflection promising perspectives for further research arise.
