The rate of population growth in urban areas has steadily increased for decades. To meet this unprecedented rate of urbanization, city systems and infrastructure are becoming highly adaptable and sustainable as they work on becoming "Smart Cities". Smart City initiatives are based on the use of interconnected, data-collecting devices. These devices include sensors that have been networked together, personal devices with information and communication technology (ICT) such as smartphones, and Internet of Things (or IoT) devices. Smart Cities involve many different technologies in equally as many areas. Practically every part of city life is now able to be observed, analyzed, and improved with new technologies. In this book, we will explore the foundation of Smart City technologies, gain an in-depth understanding of how Smart Cities operate in the fields of transportation, buildings, infrastructure, public safety and security, policy and regulation, and finally we will look into the future to see what is emerging in the quickly progressing field of Smart Cities.
