Sketches of Amerindian (pb)

Edward A. Goodall was the official artist accompanying the 1841-43 expedition to British Guiana. Hailed as a 'talented artist' who attracted the attention of J M W Turner, Goodall's work has great historical as well as artistic interest. His remarkable and realistic sketches of the Amerindian tribes of Guyana, their homes and occupations, and of landscapes in the interior of the country have been preserved in four folios in the British Library for over a century. It was the background history of these sketches that led Sister Mary Noel Menezes to study them in detail and provide her valuable commentary on Goodall's work. In this new edition, nearly seventy water-colour sketches are reproduced that provide important information on the many tribes of Guyana in the early nineteenth-century - they include tribes now extinct in the territory.
