Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. It is the purpose of this investigation to trace and to interpret the semantic history of the words for the emotions in some of the Indo European languages, and to establish a comprehensive classification of their sources and their shifts in meaning. I believe that, except for certain difficulties mentioned on page 9, the intention has been realized. At any rate, the wider heads marked by capital letters (a-g) and by Roman numerals will accommodate any more specific developments that may have failed to appear in the material to which I have limited myself. So words with an earlier meaning 'smile' for which I have, contrary to expectation, not succeeded in establishing a development to 'be pleased, or so' will readily fall into group B. V, and so forth.
