This volume analyses the transformation of social sectarianism into political sectarianism across the Arab world. Using a framework of social theories and socio-historical analysis, the book distinguishes betweentaifa, or sect, and moderntaifiyya, sectarianism, arguing that sectarianism itself produces imaginary sects.
