School Violence and Conflict Resolution

Nearly 55.6 million students are enrolled in grades pre-K through twelve in the school year. Almost 8 percent of those students reported being threatened or injured with a weapon while on school property. School violence has made news headlines all too often in recent years. In this accessible narrative, readers learn about the causes of school violence, including gangs, drugs, abuse at home, and accessibility to guns. Readers will examine the effects of how violence is portrayed in the entertainment industry. Examples of various conflicts and the skills needed to resolve them are studied as well. Strategies that schools are now using to prevent incidents of violence on school property, methods for staying safe, and programs involving anger management are also explored.
