A pregnant Mayan woman goes into the vast Yucatan jungle where she gives birth. She and her child survive in an ancient, abandoned city with an undisturbed cenote. The two endure until the boy leaves and make his way to civilization. A blind curandera takes the child in, and a crippled Madonna, a protective priest, a lobo detective, and many others figure in the boy's experiences.
