Of course, the county has experienced its share of events of national importance: rioting, civil war, archaeological discoveries and life- changing inventions. Over the centuries, the ruling classes have competed to control the levers of power, but at the same time ordinary people have struggled through their own dramas. With only alcohol to soothe their exhaustion and worries, inevitably conflict broke out behind closed doors as well as on battle- fields.
