Humanity had never come to terms with the fact that it was alone in the Universe. It had, however, long since stopped taking it personally.

Dags McCarthy is not a happy man. Having tripped down the staircase of responsibility all his career, he leads a group of Police officers picked from the lowest layers of life's reject pile. All but replaced by a fleet of autonomous drones, they keep a token Human presence around a backwater little solar system in the middle of nowhere.

In the middle of another busy year doing nothing at all, a killing without explanation throws them from their soulless lives into a scheme organised by entities unseen. Forced to stumble into a world of Cults, Soldiers and Government-types, they're out of their depth and almost out of liquor. Yet as threads from across the Galaxy weave together, they may be some of the few people who can stop something truly dreadful happening to an awful lot of people...
