And in regard the Planters' necessity doth compel them for the management only of their Lands, to keep so vast a stock of Negroes and other Slaves, whose desperate lives and great numbers become dangerous to them, and all other the inhabitants; that therefore such who are not bound up by that necessity, in having Plantations of their own, or hired land, may not increase the danger to this Island, by keeping Negroes or other Slaves to hire out to others: Be it therefore enacted by the Authority aforesaid, that no person of the Hebrew Nation, residing in any Sea-port town of this Island, shall keep or employ any Negro or other Slave, be he man or boy, for any use or ser vice whatsoever, more than one Negro or other Slave, man or boy,138 American Jewish Historical Society.
