In 1543, the ancient world began to unravel. The Polish astronomer Copernicus wrecked the old sense that the cosmos revolved around a stationary Earth, opening up the dizzying freedoms and dangers of the modern age. But was the cosmos that Copernicus unseated so ancient after all? This book argues that the importance of cosmic hierarchy, with Earth at the centre, only arose with agriculture and civilization.
