Nikolai Mendeleyev, a noted Russian physicist, defies his government's orders to begin working on a secret weapons project. Threatened with imprisonment, he stows away on a freighter bound for America and enters the country illegally. Penniless and speaking only halting English, he is hired by Beth Winters, a no-nonsense English professor, who needs help caring for her terminally ill mother and the home they share. Nikolai tranforms the older woman's dying days into a time of peace, but he and Beth always clash. Beneath the surface, however, a growing physical attraction simmers between them.
