In the four hundred years since the first European settlers arrived, the hills of New York City have been shaved down to make way for skyscrapers, and land mass has been added to its islands in order to meet demand for additional living and working space. In this book, primary source illustrations are juxtaposed with full-color photographs and authentic text, to explore the many ways in which the physical environment of New York City has been changed, and also the ways that life has remained the same.
