...Over the years, ceaseless study and deep understanding have generated a real and intense appreciation for the abilities engendered by my ancestors. In a hostile landscape and among denigrating circumstances they chose to survive. What strikes me is that contrary to the claim of America itself we, African Americans, truly are The Melting Pot. We have amalgamated and synthesized cultures. We have combined our customs, the mixing of races, our worship, cooking, music and language with the deftness America merely aspires to.
