This research paper was written in1978 by Ward Merkeley, M.D. whenhe was a first year medical studentattending the University Of UtahSchool of Medicine. It is one of thefirst original papers suggesting andexploring the theoretical potentialsand practical limitations of GeneTherapy. The paper discusses intechnical detail the means of isolatingand inserting a normal hemogloblingene into the erythoid stem cells ofpeople with Sickle Cell Anemia and BThalassemia. The difficulties andlimitation of Gene Therapy arediscussed in detail, as well as, someethical considerations.
