Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. In his admirable Study of Religion Dr. Mar tineau criticises some of my positions. I have not formally replied to him; but, taking the advice of Professor Flint in Mind, I have, in view of Dr. Martineau's objections, written a little less concisely than in the first edition.
