Medtner. Forgotten Tunes for piano, cycle 2 (Lyrical tunes) Op. 39

The pieces of the three cycles "Forgotten Themes" by N. Medtner are based on themes composed by him throughout his earlier compositional career but remained unused.

The first cycle (Op. 38) opens with the sonata "Reminiscenza" ("Reminiscence"), followed by a series of "Canzonas" and "Dances."

The second cycle of "Forgotten Themes" (Op. 39) consists of five predominantly lyrical pieces. The exception is the concluding piece, "Tragic Sonata," a work full of drama and pathos.

The third cycle of "Forgotten Themes" (Op. 40) is a suite of six dances of different types. The entire cycle is unified by a common joyful mood.
