Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. Although there exist many and varied books dealing with Sound in its different aspects, there are none, so far as the author -of the present little work is aware, specially devoted to the subject of Harmonics treated experimentally in a simple and elementary form. Of all matters connected with music, perhaps one of the most interesting and fascinating is the wonderful power and influence exercised by harmonics in determining what is known as the tone-colour (klangfarbe) of various instruments and sounds. Students and others who think of harmonics only as peculiar effects produced by players upon stringed instruments, and who have made no attempt to analyse the constituent parts of so-called single sounds (which are compound sounds), can hardly form an idea of the marvellous variety which exists in tone colour. In studying the following chapters the experiments described should be made in the order in which they are given. Students who do not play the violin may have to omit the Violin Experiments, but nevertheless they should read the entire work in order to understand the subject clearly.
