Roman way-stations' or stopping places along the roadside performed a number of diverse functions, including places to obtain refreshments, warehouses, baths, commercial spaces, shops, stables and open spaces where business could be carried out. This detailed study looks at the topographical and archaeological evidence for these structure, their historical development and their role in various activities to do with the movement of people and goods.
