Le Roman de Moeurs: Un Genre Roturier a l'Age Democratique

Originally a popular literary genre, the roman de moeurs (novel of manners) was later claimed by realist and naturalist authors. The common genre would thus gain respectability through the influence of certain writers, eventually becoming indistinguishable from what we now call the "traditional novel."
