In 1519, Hern n Cort s set sail from Cuba with five hundred soldiers and eleven ships, defying direct orders with the clear intent of reaching the heart of the greatest empire in the New World. Upon entering Tenochtitl n, he and his men were welcomed with honors by Moctezuma and his people, who revered them as gods. However, the subsequent abduction and removal of Moctezuma, followed by the destruction of the capital, turned the conquest of Mexico into one of the most gripping and tragic episodes in world history.
