KING ARTHUR'S BATTLEFIELDS is a historical detective story, about real events behind the legendary chivalric king and his knights. Around AD 500, while Roman Britannia was breaking up into warring kingdoms, Christian forces at a series of battles were led by a man so charismatic that his name, Arthur, has been remembered ever since. Historians have not worked out where Arthur lived and fought, but this book offers the first coherent, evidence-based account of the geographical, political, and military logic of events surrounding him. Welsh monks, in the west of Britain, wrote the main surviving account of his battles, which actually happened in the east. Using evidence from place names, archaeology, and the landscape, this groundbreaking book locates a dozen battle sites (including Badon hill, the river Dubglas, and Guinnion fort) in a ring around Lincoln. Much remains for others to discover. Dr Anthony Durham is a scientist who published extensively from his research in molecular biology, on three continents, then founded a computer business. Living near a medieval battle site and a Roman road has prompted him to become a leading investigator of Britain's earliest geographical names.
