When the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, moved to the Supreme Comrade, his death came as a violent, unexpected shock, and this had a great impact on the condition of Muslims, as many abandoned Islam. Because they were new to him, and he had not gained control of their hearts, and others managed to deal with the matter to face the new situation. These people looked at the situation and studied it, and they saw that the nation must have a supreme ruler to govern it, take charge of its affairs, and manage its affairs, so that he could succeed the Messenger in this aspect of his mission. Because his first mission, which was religious legislation, ended with his death, and the caliphs after him had only to follow the guidance of the Qur''an and the Sunnah of the Prophet, and thus a new center and system of government emerged, required by the nature of the circumstances. This is what is called the "Caliphate."
