Harm Reduction in Prison

This is the first book to take stock of international strategies to prevent AIDS and the drug problem inside and outside of prisons. The Swiss initiative involving the prescription of heroin and the supply of sterile needles to inmates in two of the country's prisons is discussed in detail. The opportunities for harm reduction are examined from the point of view of preventive medicine, sociology, jurisprudence and prison administration, and these are set against the background of health policy on the one hand and drug prohibition on the other. The aim of the book is to provide the urgently-needed scientific foundation for political and administrative decision-making with a view to improving health provision in prisons.
Das vorliegende Buch enthalt eine erste Bestandesaufnahme internationaler Strategien zur Drogen- und Aids-Pravention innerhalb und ausserhalb von Gefangnissen. Die weltweit ersten Projekte zur Heroinverschreibung und Spritzenabgabe im Gefangnis, durchgefuhrt in zwei Schweizer Strafanstalten, werden vorgestellt. Aus Sicht der Sozial- und Praventivmedizin, Soziologie, Rechtswissenschaft und Gefangnisverwaltung werden Probleme und Chancen der Risikominderung im Spannungsfeld zwischen Gesundheits- und Repressionspolitik kritisch beleuchtet. Ziel des Buches ist es, fur politische und administrative Entscheidungsprozesse dringend benotigte wissenschaftliche Grundlagen zur Verbesserung der Gesundheitsvorsorge im Gefangnis bereitzustellen."
