Sometimes history is made by big ideas, or huge events, but it can narrow down to one obscure planet, one hidden place and one small pair of hands. This is the story of what Etta's small hands found and what happened next. On the planet Dilma, the Rainbird family have to learn how to care for Squeak, a new small member who is very different from everyone else. When Squeak is thirteen, the Dilma settlers learn that there will be a visit from the Galactic Investigation and Settlement Service. The GISS rules mean that Squeak's existence, as an intelligent alien, threatens all the people of Dilma. To keep him safe, his big sister Flora, his brothers, and his friends escape with Squeak to Ratho, where he was found, in the hope of finding his own people. Will they all reach their goal safely? Will their search be rewarded? What will it mean for all the children of Earth scattered across the galaxy on their own new worlds? Can a tiny space foundling grow up to make history for everyone?
