Introduction by Alberto Manguel.
In the summer of 1816, the poet Percy B. Shelley and his wife Mary met with Lord Byron and his doctor at a villa on the shores of Lake Leman. At Lord Byron's urging, and to liven up a stormy evening, they decided that each would invent a ghost story. The quietest and most reserved, Mary Shelley, thus gave life to what would become her most famous character: Dr. Frankenstein. Within a year, she would complete the novel. The story is well known: a scientist decides to create a creature with a life of its own, which he then rejects. A metaphor for life, freedom, and love, Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus is a wonderful fable with all the ingredients of the great myths, a great classic that we now recover with a new translation and preceded by a splendid study by Alberto Manguel on the influence of myth on the imagination of cinema.
