Fragmented Identities

For James Joyce, artistic life in Dublin seemed as narrow, small, and restrictive as his domestic life, filled with arguments about religion and politics. With his short stories, the writer did not offer a tender and virtuous portrait of Ireland. Instead, he presented his compatriots and the world with stories of Irish urban life, with all its flaws and sordidness. 'Fragmented Identities' proposes a study of these stories from the perspectives of symbolic violence and obliterated desire.
