Fostering Creativity in Rehabilitation

The rehabilitation professions are under pressure to innovate in order to deliver services to a growing market of increasingly savvy consumers. These consumers are no longer limited to their conventional care choices and have access to quality online resources for many of their needs. Rehabilitation professionals' pressures are compounded by increased productivity demands, technical information overload, and increasing risks for professional burnout. In short, rehabilitation is in need of rehabilitation in order to transition into the next generation of health care delivery. Unfortunately innovation and creativity have not been, nor are they now, in the curriculums of these professions. The schools continue to churn out graduates doing what has been done before, and current providers are admonished by their professional organizations to practice only what has high level research evidence to support the practice. Meanwhile, veteran professionals as both employees and owners find themselves faced with the acute need to innovate in order to survive and flourish.
