Guadalupe Island (fig 2) is about 37 km (23 miles) long north and south, 12 km (8 miles) wide, and 1295 m (4257 feet) high, with an area of about 250 km2 (98 square miles). It is rather uniformly high in the northern third, the highest point, Mt. Augusta, scarcely rising above the general level. In the southern half is one rather sharp 975-meter (3200 - foot) peak, E1 Picacho. From there, the surface drops away to rather low elevations at the south end, with scattered cones and craters (fig.
