Flatland

Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions, by Edwin A. Abbott, is a satirical novella narrated by A. Square, a two-dimensional figure living in a rigidly stratified world where social rank is determined by the number of sides one has and where women are reduced to line segments under strict control. When a mysterious Sphere from three-dimensional "e;Spaceland"e; visits, A. Square is forced to confront the limits of his perception and the dogmas of Flatland's society. Through its imaginative geometry and playful logic, the book critiques Victorian class hierarchy, conformity, and intellectual complacency while using the idea of higher dimensions to explore how hard it is to recognize realities beyond one's experience.
