Finding My Gigi
A story of love, loss and the special bond between Max and his Grandmother, Gigi.
Born from a poem written by Max and his Mum, this book helps children explore grief with tenderness and optimism.
When Max lost his beloved Gigi, my Mum, to pancreatic cancer, he was just nine years old. The sadness was overwhelming and the questions were endless: Where did she go? Why did this happen? Will we ever feel ok again?
We started talking and writing and what came about was a poem. Honest, gentle and full of love. It helped us understand what we were feeling and gave Max a way to stay connected to his Gigi even after she was gone.
We are a Mum and son who turned grief into a poem. We're not authors, we just tried to make something meaningful out of something heartbreaking and help other young people encountering similar experiences.
That poem became 'Finding My Gigi', a small book with a big heart, written by us and illustrated by the amazing Leanne who brought our book to life
Watching Max look through our window, with his dog Poppy, waiting for his Gigi to arrive was his highlight of the day.
This poem is about remembering about how love doesn't disappear. It's about how children grieve and how we can support them through it.
If this book brings comfort to even one family, it will have been worth it all.
