It is 2008, and the global financial crisis sees Ian Sanders out of a job in Melbourne. He flies to Africa, the land of his birth, to follow his dream to write a novel set in the wilds of Zimbabwe.

In his twenty-year absence, much has changed. The country is in turmoil. A new power-sharing government is imminent, but the political situation remains volatile. People fear the police, and violent crime goes unpunished. Supermarket shelves are empty, and essential goods are scarce. Cholera rages and the Zimbabwean dollar is in free fall.

Ian plans to focus on his novel and stay out of trouble, but slowly he is drawn into a web of conspiracy and fear that pervades the lives of so many of the country's people.
