Extension of Hong Kong Territory

The New Territories is a very bizarre chapter in the history of Hong Kong.Britain once leased this large area of land to expand the colonial territory of Hong Kong but finally ended the colonial history of Hong Kong due to the lease period of the land.The Handover of Hong Kong in 1997 which changed the destiny of Hong Kong originates from The Convention Between Great Britain and China Respecting an Extension of Hong Kong Territory signed between Great Britain and the Qing Government of China in 1898.Therefore, regardless of differences in land area or occupancy conditions, the history of the New Territories is unique and not a natural extension of the history of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon.Over the past half century, scholars at home and abroad have published many monographs of research on the New Territories by taking the New Territories as a typical example of China's lineage society in Ming and Qing Dynasties.However, the history of the New Territories is rich in content. It aims to view the basic features of the early history of the New Territories under British governance from perspectives such as politics, administration and land.The book also lists Chinese translations of several important documents on British government's lease of the New Territories which provide readers with convenient and original reference data for exploring the history of the New Territories.
