This book contains Victor Hugo's 1869 play, "e;Esmeralda"e;. It is based on Esmeralda, a fictional character in Hugo's 1831 novel "e;The Hunchback of Notre-Dame"e;. Hugo originally wrote "e;La Esmeralda"e; as an opera libretto and adaptation of "e;Notre Dame de Paris"e;. However, there are notable differences between the two, the most obvious of which is the representation of the character Phoebus-in "e;La Esmeralda"e;, he is noble and righteous, but in "e;Notre Dame de Paris"e;, he is a womaniser and scoundrel. Victor Marie Hugo (1802 - 1885) was a French novelist, dramatist, and poet belonging to the Romantic movement. He is widely hailed as one of the most accomplished and well-known French writers, originally achieving renown for his poetical endeavours-the most notable of which are the volumes "e;Les Contemplations"e; and "e;La Legende des siecles"e;. Outside of his native country, Hugo's best-known works are his novels: "e;Les Miserables"e; (1862) and "e;Notre-Dame de Paris"e; (1831), commonly known as "e;The Hunchback of Notre-Dame"e;. Aside from his literary achievements, he also produced over 4,000 beautiful drawings and was a prominent campaigner for social and political issues, including abolishing capital punishment. Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this book now in an affordable, high-quality, modern edition complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.
